If you’re interested in the world of sustainable clothing, you’ve probably been following the rise of this industry with eager eyes. From clothes made with less water to recycled materials, a whole new way to make clothing is appearing – and our planet is very happy to hear it!
This year, as we continue to re-evaluate our relationship with what we wear, a new wave of sustainable trends are making their way into the mainstream. Let’s take a look at some of the most important.
Regenerative Fashion Over Sustainability
The first trend isn’t actually sustainable fashion at all – it’s a step further. Where sustainable fashion looks at reducing the negative impact of textiles on the planet, regenerative fashion works to create a positive one – pretty amazing, right? It restores ecosystems and uses renewable materials that are sustainably sourced to rid the industry of eco-damage. As more brands take an interest in their footprint on the planet, you can expect to hear a lot more about regenerative fashion.
Materials Designed For Reuse
We’ve been very excited to see that there’s a growing focus on repurposing textiles in the fashion industry. Using materials that can be recycled and reused, like cotton and wool, is becoming more important to designers so that there’s less waste at the end of a product lifecycle. When you’re done with a torn or stained t-shirt, instead of it heading straight to the bin, a completely new item could be created for someone else. If we do that with every piece of clothing, we’ll cut down on a whole lot of landfill space!
Not Just “How”, But “Where”
There’s already a lot more information available about how your clothes are made, but in 2022 fashion brands need to do better. Rather than just looking at “how”, they also need to review where their clothing is sourced, made, and sold. A jumper made from cotton grown in Brazil, manufactured in China, and sold in the UK is going to rack up a hefty carbon footprint! The spotlight this year will focus on local fashion made from material sourced nearby.
Re-Selling and Repairing
If you’re a lover of scouring second-hand shops for forgotten treasures or upcycling old pieces into new favourites, this is a trend for you. By 2020, the second-hand clothing industry is set to become twice the size of fast fashion – a very promising statistic! Brands will want to keep up with this, so you can expect to see more upcycled collections appearing in spaces where there were once only new pieces.
Science-Based Targets
At COP26, fashion brands agreed to step up their work towards a more sustainable industry. As part of this, more brands will sign-up to Science Based Targets in 2022, a group that creates roadmaps to reduce emissions following the goals of the Paris Agreement. Fashion brands will create realistic targets and new commitments to improve the future of fashion, ensuring our clothing and the planet can co-exist in harmony once again.
