What motivated you to start working in sustainable fashion?
After working in the fashion business and luxury world for a few years, I began to feel uncomfortable with the overconsumption and excess I was surrounded by. When I wrote about sustainability and got to interview and connect with inspiring people in this space, I felt like I had found purpose and meaning in fashion again.
I am motivated by a desire to demystify the world of sustainable fashion, which is so often filled with jargon, greenwashing and misinformation.
What’s one thing that’s giving you hope for the future?
Incoming legislation that will force the fashion industry to tackle overproduction, waste, supply chains, worker wages and much more.
What’s some advice you have for people wanting to shop more consciously?
I would say: consider the motivations behind your purchase. Do you really need a new dress? Or are you shopping out of boredom, habit, or for a quick dopamine hit? We all need to slow down the amount of clothing we consume, so asking yourself these questions can help you identify why you’re shopping in the first place.
Next, I would say to do some research about the brand you’re buying from and see if they have any information available about their factories, materials and impact on the planet.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever heard?
Work hard and be nice to people.
What’s inspired you recently?
Witnessing the bravery and dedication of environmental and human rights protestors around the world who are fighting and risking their lives for the future of the planet despite the backlash, criticism and sacrifices.
What’s a brand you really admire?
Been London, Mother of Pearl, Pangaia, Lora Gene, so many!
Who’s one person that inspires you?
Vivienne Westwood
What’s one change you wish to see in the world?
Less talk about the climate crisis and far more action. We don’t need a summit every month to tell us what we already know – we need governments and industry to make ambitious, rapid and drastic changes to the status quo in order to see genuine positive improvements.
What’s one quote that you live by?
Do one thing every day that scares you – Eleanor Roosevelt
What’s a wardrobe essential you can’t live without?
Most of my clothes are secondhand or vintage, so I invest in good shoes and bags!
